TEA FACTS

Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world. Only water rates higher than tea in consumption. It is estimated that somewhere between 18 and 20 billion six-ounce cups of tea are consumed each day around the world.

Tea is made from the processed leaf of a tree whose scientific name is Camellia sinensis.

Tea is a stimulant because it contains caffeine. However, it contains fewer milligrams of caffeine per same-size cup as coffee.

Tea contains small quantities of tannic compounds called polyphenols, vitamins A, B2, C, D, K and P, plus trace amounts of minerals and aromatic oils. The tannin compounds and essential oils are mainly responsible for tea’s flavor, color, astringency (dryness) and aroma.
